Perseid Meteors
The Perseids are one of the best meteor showers for the northern hemisphere. The media will say they are not visible from the southern hemisphere, but you might see a few if you are in the northern half of SA.
No viewing equipment needed - just go outside and look for shooting stars coming from low in the north, during the hour before dawn.
Best place to view from: dark spot around latitude 58°N; failing that any dark site closer to home with a clear view to the north.
Best time: just before dawn.
